About Brook
Brooklyn (Brook) Aleksic is a vibrant 20‑year‑old university student, gifted curler, and beloved friend and daughter. Before June 2025 she was thriving – excelling academically at the University of Victoria, featuring in the national curling documentary Curl Power, and working at a Saskatchewan golf course. Her love of sport and her dream of becoming a teacher exemplify her determination and heart.
What Happened
In early June 2025 Brook woke up ready for work. Within hours she had lost all movement and sensation from the chest down. Initially doctors suspected transverse myelitis, a rare inflammation of the spinal cord. Further testing later revealed an even rarer and more devastating cause: Brook had suffered a spinal stroke.
Spinal strokes are extremely uncommon – medical research indicates that they account for only about 0.3–1 % of all strokes. A spinal stroke cuts off blood supply to the spinal cord and can lead to sudden paralysis, loss of sensation and long‑term disability. Brook’s stroke caused extensive damage to her spinal cord. She cannot move her legs, sit up or care for herself, and the prognosis is uncertain.
